Datawind’s PocketSurfer2 garnered a bit of a cult following when it rolled up last year. So much that they’ve just brought us word of a spanking new model, the PocketSurfer2R.
Like it’s older sibling, the new PocketSurfer2R is all about sating your obscene web addiction on the move. There’s a 640x420 VGA screen, a backlit QWERTY keyboard, with web pages rendered in their original form, not in some pesky mobile version.
On top of that Datawind says it’ll rock ‘touchpad mouse navigation’ – so basically a trackpad you’d find on your regular lappie.
Other neat additions include GPS, but no 3G, so getting online might be an issue. (full story)

The magnificent place that sells the PocketSurfer and it's Accessories is here.
Canadian company Datawind is making a bold bid to capture the Down Under market for handheld devices that connect to the Internet with yesterday's launch of its unique PocketSurfer2 and in a demonstration Vs the new Apple iPhone the device won hands down when downloading emails.
The pocket-sized gadget which is nowhere as sexy as the iPhone comes with an always-on connection to the Web, and displays fully formatted Web pages in a letterbox screen - you need to scroll vertically to see the full page.

This year whilst on holiday, I had to access my bank account to transfer some money. I used my PDA but had to find a WiFi point, which was more bother than seeking out a bank, if only I had owned a Pocketsurfer 2 then. This device is brilliant ! , easy to use and one of the most usefull gadgets I have bought. Last week I had to wait in my car for an hour when collecting someone from the railway station. Whilst waiting I was able to read my emails, order the monthly grocery shopping and text chat with my brother via instant messenger.
Sadly you cannot view online video or listen to internet radio, but from a practical perspective this device is a gem. Whether you use the internet for business, domestic use, or both, this device keeps you in touch and in control wherever you are. Initially getting up and running is easy, although you may have to call customer services to activate your account. Apparently some of the sim cards fitted do not allow you to activate straight from the box as stated. Despite this I was up and running in only 5 minutes and customer support were very helpfull.
All the above and free use for the first year - Fantastic !!.
