    A: The PocketSurfer2 is wireless internet access device. It operates using existing cellular networks and offering a full and rich internet experience not scrunched pages on a tiny screen. The internet appears exactly as it would on a PC and you interact with it the same way as on a PC. The PocketSurfer2s patented compression and acceleration technology delivers the web with unparalleled speed, most pages opening within 5-7 seconds.

     

    Q: What kind of operating system does it have?

    A: DataWind provides a proprietary operating system (OS) for its PocketSurfer2.  The combination of the OS as a platform for browsing the internet, combined with the hardware and a powerful back-end patented server acceleration technology, provide the fast mobile internet access experience.

     

    Q. How much compression does the PocketSurfer2 offer?

    A: Data compression on the PocketSurfer2 reduces the amount of data sent through the mobile phone signal to improve your wireless data download time by a factor of 4 to 10 times and the web is seen in its original format, original layout and full graphics within guaranteed page views of 5-7 seconds. The exact level of data compression varies on which website you are viewing.

     

    Q: How fast is it?

    A: Most sites will load within 5-7 seconds where other cellular devices can take minutes. Surfing speed is similar to ‘Basic DSL’ Broadband service. Discussions of kb/sec are not relevant to the PocketSurfer2 because of the compression and acceleration technology used. Note that speed is dependant on signal strength and network traffic which can vary.

    A: No. The PocketSurfer2 comes with cellular service, the user need not deal with the carrier at all.

    A: We have arrangements with multiple carriers in the UK.

     

    Q: Does it work on 3G, Edge, etc.?

    A: The PocketSurfer2 operates on GPRS networks. This substantially increases the operability of the device outside of major urban areas and also facilitates production of high performance low cost device.

     

    Q: How big is it and what is the weight?

    A: It is about the size of a cheque book (152 X 75 X 15mm) and easily fits into a breast pocket or purse – weighing at just 174 gms.


    Q: How big is the screen of the PokcetSurfer2? How do you compare it to other handheld internet-access gadgets?

    A:  The PocketSurfer2 delivers a full-screen 640 pixel VGA-width user experience, requiring minimal horizontal scrolling. 

    With competitive products, small screen sizes, result in re-formatted scrunched-up pages that do not resemble the user's desktop experience.  If the pages are not re-formatted, they require significant scrolling, making usage very difficult.  While, when they are re-formatted, content becomes difficult to locate and navigate.

     

    Q: How long does the battery last and what is the average life of the battery?

    A: The battery life is 5 hours active usage and 5 days standby usage. The battery takes approximately 4 hours to fully charge on the first charge and 2 hours for a full charge after that. The battery should last for several years if the PocketSurfer2 is properly handled and maintained.

     

    Q: Can it run Java, active-X etc?

    A:  Yes. All variations of Java, applets, active-x will run on the PocketSurfer2.

     

    Q: Can I watch video or Flash?

    A:  No. The PocketSurfer2 is still limited by the bandwidth of cellular network. These type of applications, by there very nature, limit the amount of compression that can be done.

     

    Q: Can I go to any internet site?

    A:  Yes. Any site that is accessible with a standard desktop computer can be accessed with the PocketSurfer2. These include ftp sites, IP addresses, sites requiring javascript.

     

    Q: How secure is it?  / Can I do online banking? / Can I trade stocks, watch streaming stock tickers?

    A: Very – You can access https:// sites and other secure sites (SSLs, VPNs) and do your day to day banking, trade stocks, access other financial and personal information securely on your PocketSurfer2.The GPRS connection between the device and our servers sends data that can only be interpreted by the device or our servers. Servers are located in highly secured data centers and employ the latest security and encryption technologies.

    Yes. Most users have used the PocketSurfer2 at some point for online banking.
    Yes. Most of these financial sites operate on Java platforms and are therefore not a problem for the PocketSurfer2. Note that site requiring continual refreshing may consume more data/ minutes.

     

    Q: Can I open multiple pages?

    A:  Yes. If the site you are on requires it, multiple pages will open as required. This is typical of many on line E-mail sites.

     

    Q: Can I print using the USB Port?

    A: No. The USB Port on your device is meant only for charging the Unit.


    Q: Is the device waterproof?

    A:  No. The PocketSurfer2 is not meant to be exposed to water or moisture.  Try to keep it dry and protected from water and moisture.

     

    Q: Can I use it outside of the UK?

    A: Roaming is available @ GBP 14.99 per hour.

     

    Q: How much surfing time/MB do I get? How can I get more?

    A: Included in the purchase price is 20 hours surfing time, equivalent to about 20MB. This is more than adequate for an average user of the device.
